Tyler & Sebastian waren door Via Berlin en de Universiteit van Amsterdam uitgenodigd om samen met studenten in 3 weken verschillende onderzoeksvragen om te zetten in een expositie. Hiervoor gaven de broers de workshops fotografie, creatief schrijven en spoken word.
Dit resulteerde in een expositie van 29 werken en 6 spoken word performances in het voorprogramma van Normality No More in Internationaal Theater Amsterdam

13.09.2024 - 03.11.2024Hoe komt het dat Javanen in Suriname zijn beland? Voor het antwoord op deze vraag doken kunstenaars Sebastian en Tyler Koudijzer in hun familiegeschiedenis. De broers reisden voor hun project De Gesuikerde Onderneming naar Suriname. Daar bezochten ze de plek waar hun overgrootouders vanuit Java heen trokken om als contractarbeider te werken en later ook een gezin stichtten.
Als gastcollectioneurs voor Verhalen van de Stad willen Sebastian en Tyler een licht schijnen op de verhalen van Javaans-Surinaamse contractarbeiders en hun nazaten. De kunstenaars leggen in hun collectie de nadruk niet op informatieve boeken, maar juist op romans, verhalenboeken en poëziebundels. Zo laten ze zien hoe veel kennis en informatie er besloten ligt in persoonlijke verhalen en -geschiedenissen.

With Grounding – Stories of Migration, FOTODOK ✕ BredaPhoto Festival present works by seven artists that tell stories of first generation migration – those who came to the Netherlands by choice or by circumstance. These works reflect processes of diasporic homemaking and identity formation: both ever-evolving pursuits for the uprooted. Split into parts, or caught between past and present, the urge to define a new sense of home – and a new sense of self – becomes stronger than ever.

This exhibition is linked to the theme of the 2024 Venice Biennale, curated by Adriano Pedrosa, "Foreigners Everywhere.": It explores the idea that everyone, regardless of location, is both surrounded by and is intrinsically a foreigner, highlighting the universality of the outsider experience. The exhibition focuses on artists who are immigrants, expatriates, and diasporic individuals, to emphasize diverse perspectives and the shared human condition of being a foreigner.

22.03.2024Tijdens het Rotterdamse Boekenbal deden we performance uit een hoofdstuk van De Gesuikerde Onderneming over de invloed van de kerk binnen onze familie en Mariënburg, Suriname.
Over offers maken voor de liefde, het vertrek naar Nederland en zendingswerk op de kampongs.

During the Rotterdam Book Ball we did performance from a chapter of The Sugarcoated Venture about the influence of the church within our family and Mariënburg, Suriname.

Warung Tori #3 in Verhalenhuis Belvédère, Rotterdam
01.12.2023De laatste Warung Tori was een magische avond. We hadden het onder andere over het naar de overkant gaan, de matteklopper, saoto soep en de hiphop met een zachte G welke grijs werd gedraaid door de broers Tyler & Sebastian in 2008!
Speciale dank aan de gasten Cheraine Baljé & Nosa. Liefde naar een ieder die naar de expositie is geweest en die een Warung Tori avond heeft bezocht, we kijken met trots terug naar de 3 maanden in Verhalenhuis Belvédère. Verwacht in 2024 nog veel meer De Gesuikerde Onderneming.
The last Warung Tori was a magical night. We talked about going to the other side, the matte beater, saoto soup and hip hop with a soft G which was played by brothers Tyler & Sebastian back in 2008! Special thanks to guests Cheraine Baljé & Nosa. Love to everyone who went to the exhibition and attended a Warung Tori night, we look back with pride at the 3 months in Verhalenhuis Belvédère. Expect many more The Sugarcoated Venture in 2024!

Een avond in teken van de expositie De Gesuikerde Onderneming met ditmaal beeldend kunstenaar Anouk Vasilda die bij ons aan tafel sloot! We spraken over onwetendheid, de zoektocht naar de Javaanse-Surinaamse geschiedenis en de waarde van familie. Herkenbare elementen die allen terugkomen in haar film ‘Saminah’

Warung Tori #1 in Verhalenhuis Belvédère, Rotterdam
08.09.2023Op drie avonden tijdens de expositieperiode presenteren de broers het project De Gesuikerde Onderneming onder het genot van een compleet diner uit de Volkskeuken van Verhalenhuis Belvédère! Kunstenaars schuiven aan hun tafel aan om te vertellen over hoe zij op hun eigen manier de herinneringen aan de migratie vanuit Suriname meenemen in hun makerschap. De eerste gasten waren Indy Quinty & Sammie Sedano! Familie, gemeenschap en identiteit waren de thema’s van de gesprekken.
On three evenings during the exhibition period, the brothers will present the project The Sugarcoated Venture while having a complete dinner from the Volkskeuken of Verhalenhuis Belvédère! Artists join their table to talk about how they, in their own way, bring memories of migration from Suriname into their artistry. The first guests were Indy Quinty & Sammie Sedano! Family, community and identity were the themes of the conversations.
